Do You Actually Need to Pay to Unlock a Phone in Canada?

Often you do not, and TechBrotherz will tell you that before taking your money. Under the CRTC Wireless Code, as revised in Telecom Regulatory Policy CRTC 2017-200, every mobile device sold in Canada on or after 1 December 2017 must be provided to the customer already unlocked. For devices sold before that date, carriers must unlock them free of charge when the customer asks.

So if the phone is on your own account with a Canadian carrier, the first call should be to that carrier, not to a repair store. It costs nothing and it is your right. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either misinformed or hoping you are.

Paid unlocking exists for the situations that rule does not reach. A phone bought secondhand from someone whose account you cannot access, a phone brought in from another country where no Canadian rule applies, a phone from a carrier that no longer operates, or a device where the original account holder is simply not contactable. Those are the cases where paying solves a problem that a phone call cannot.

What Does Unlocking a Phone Actually Do?

Carrier unlocking removes the software restriction that ties a handset to one network's SIM cards. An unlocked phone accepts a SIM from any carrier, which is what lets you switch providers without changing devices, use a local SIM when travelling, or sell the phone to someone on a different network.

Unlocking does not change anything else about the phone. It does not alter the operating system, it does not remove the Apple or Google account signed into it, it does not wipe your data, and it does not affect the manufacturer's warranty. It is a network permission, not a modification of the device.

It is also worth being clear about what unlocking is not. It is not jailbreaking or rooting, which are entirely different things that replace parts of the operating system. It is not removing an activation lock. And it is not a way to get a phone off someone else's account.

What Cannot Be Unlocked?

A phone that has been reported lost or stolen is blacklisted on the national IMEI database that Canadian carriers share. A blacklisted phone cannot be unlocked by TechBrotherz, by any other shop, or by the carrier itself, and it will not work on a Canadian network regardless of what SIM goes in it. If a secondhand phone will not activate, this is the most common reason.

A phone with an outstanding balance or an unpaid device financing agreement is a related case. The carrier can refuse to unlock it until the account is settled, and that is a billing matter rather than a technical one.

An Iphone locked to someone else's Apple Account through Activation Lock is a different restriction entirely, and unlocking will not help. Only the original owner can remove that, by signing the device out of their account. We check for both of these before you pay, because we would rather you kept the money than paid for something that cannot work.

How Do You Check Whether a Phone Is Already Unlocked?

The simplest test is the definitive one: put a SIM from a different carrier in the phone and see whether it registers on the network and can make a call. If it does, the phone is unlocked. Nothing else you can check on the device is as reliable as that.

On an Iphone, Settings, General, About has a Carrier Lock line that reads No SIM restrictions when the phone is unlocked. That line is accurate on current iOS versions and it is worth checking before you pay anyone. On Android the equivalent varies by manufacturer, which is why the second-SIM test remains the one we trust.

Bring the phone to the Store at 3317 17 Ave SE and we will check it for you. If it turns out the phone is already unlocked, that is the end of the conversation and there is nothing to pay.

What About Google Account Locks and Screen Locks?

Carrier unlocking, which this page covers, removes a network restriction. A phone stuck at a Google account verification screen after a factory reset is a different lock entirely: Factory Reset Protection, an ownership protection rather than a carrier one. TechBrotherz handles that as its own service, with proof of ownership required, and its page explains what it can and cannot do.

The two are easy to confuse because both stop a phone being used. The test is what the phone is asking for. A phone that works but rejects another carrier's SIM needs a carrier unlock. A phone that will not finish setting up until a previous Google account signs in needs FRP removal, which is a different job with different rules.

Forgotten screen locks sit in the same family as FRP: an ownership protection the Store will only ever remove for a device that can be shown to be yours. Ask at the Store, and bring what proof you have.

How Long Does Unlocking Take?

Most unlocks at TechBrotherz are completed the same day. You bring the phone in with its IMEI, we confirm the model and carrier, and in most cases the phone is unlocked before the day is out.

Some combinations of carrier and model take longer, and a small number cannot be done at all. We check which case you are in before you pay, rather than taking the money and telling you afterwards. If it cannot be done, you do not pay for the attempt.

You will need the IMEI, which is the fifteen-digit number unique to the handset. Dial star-hash-zero-six-hash on the phone and it appears on screen, or find it in the settings under About. It is also printed on the original box and on the SIM tray of some models.

Process

How Does a Repair at TechBrotherz Work?

No appointment, no booking form, and no work starts before you have agreed the price.

  1. Step 1

    Check With Your Carrier First

We will tell you this at the Store too. If the phone is on your own account with a Canadian carrier, they are required to unlock it free of charge. Save the money if that route is open to you.

  2. Step 2

Bring the Phone and Its Details

We need the make, the model and the IMEI, which you get by dialling star-hash-zero-six-hash on the phone itself or reading it from the settings.

  3. Step 3

We Confirm It Can Be Done

Not every phone can be unlocked. A phone reported lost or stolen is blacklisted on the national database, and no unlocking service can change that. We check before you pay.

  4. Step 4

    We Process the Unlock

Most unlocks come back the same day. Some carriers and some models take longer, and we will tell you what to expect before you commit.

  5. Step 5

You Test It With Another SIM

The proof of an unlock is a SIM from a different carrier working in the phone. That is what we check before calling it done.

  • People who have brought a phone from another country and want it working on a Canadian network.

Honest Limits

What TechBrotherz Does Not Do

Blacklisted phones cannot be unlocked

A handset reported lost or stolen sits on the shared national IMEI database. No shop and no carrier can unlock it, and it will not work on a Canadian network. We check this before you pay.

Google locks are a different service

A phone stuck at a Google verification screen after a reset needs FRP removal, not a carrier unlock. That is its own service with its own rules, and proof of ownership is required for it without exception.

Activation Lock is not carrier lock

An Iphone signed into someone else's Apple Account cannot be used until they remove it. That is a different restriction from carrier locking and unlocking does not touch it.

Ask your carrier before you pay us

If the phone is on your own Canadian account, your carrier must unlock it free of charge. We would rather tell you that and lose the sale than charge you for something you can get for nothing.
